In an interview with Big Boy TV, Tems described her expectations of receiving a standing ovation being met instead with jeers and the throwing of plastic bottles.

“I remember one time I was going to perform at my school as an up-and-coming singer and I thought I was going to receive a standing ovation. But I got booed. They even threw plastic bottles at me,” she said.

The Grammy-winning singer attributed some of the early rejections to her insistence on maintaining her original style, rather than performing familiar covers or mainstream sounds popular among her peers.

Despite the setbacks, Tems said she remained committed to her artistic vision and refused to compromise her musical identity.

Reflecting on her journey, she expressed satisfaction that perseverance allowed her to achieve international recognition while staying true to her creative instincts.
