Sabinus’ “Something Hooge” trademark dispute with Peak Milk and Gala Sausage Roll is resolved amicably, highlighting intellectual property rights in Nigeria
The trademark dispute over the viral catchphrase “Something Hooge”, popularised by Nigerian comedian Chukwuemeka Ejekwu, popularly known as Sabinus, has been amicably resolved, the Practitioners of Content Creators, Skit Makers and Influencers Guild of Nigeria (PCCSIGN) confirmed on Monday.
Micheal Nwabufo, known professionally as Mike Premium and president of PCCSIGN, announced that negotiations with FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria PLC, makers of Peak Milk, and UAC Foods Limited, producers of Gala Sausage Roll, had concluded positively.
The disputes arose after Peak Milk and Gala Sausage Roll used elements linked to Sabinus’ creative identity in promotional campaigns.
Legal proceedings had sought N1 billion in damages from Peak Milk and N100 million from UAC Foods over the unauthorised use of the catchphrase and associated imagery.
Mike Premium noted that the resolution reflects a constructive approach to intellectual property disputes in Nigeria’s creative sector, demonstrating that professional engagement and dialogue can yield positive outcomes.
“Through mutual agreement and partnership, these matters have been resolved, representing a milestone for protecting creators’ rights in the entertainment industry,” he said.
The phrase “Something Hooge” gained nationwide attention through Sabinus’ online comedy skits and was officially trademarked with the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment’s Industrial Property Office Registry in 2021.
Records show the trademark was filed on November 26 and accepted on December 4, 2021, covering multiple classes including advertising, financial and commercial affairs, and entertainment.
Mike Premium emphasised that the guild continues to advocate for intellectual property awareness among content creators, skit makers, and digital influencers, encouraging registration, formal business structures, and structured collaborations with brands.
Sabinus first raised concerns in 2022 after Peak Milk used the phrase in a social media campaign and UAC Foods employed a cartoon resembling him in a Gala Sausage Roll promotion without consent.
The comedian, widely known as Oga Sabinus or Mr Funny, rose to prominence through online skits and won the Best Online Social Content Creator award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards in 2022.
Mike Premium confirmed that no further legal action is pending, marking the dispute’s closure as a positive development for the Nigerian creative industry.
