The record-breaking milestone was powered largely by the album’s global smash hit Calm Down, whose remix featuring American pop star Selena Gomez became the first African song to reach 1 billion Spotify streams in 2023.

The combined versions of Calm Down have now amassed over 2 billion streams, while the remaining 20 tracks from the Rave & Roses (Ultra) album contribute just under a billion.

Rema’s achievement puts him ahead of South African singer Tyla, whose self-titled debut album sits at over 2 billion streams.

Other African albums to cross the 1 billion mark on Spotify include Burna Boy’s African Giant and Love, Damini, Wizkid’s Made in Lagos: Deluxe Edition, and CKay’s CKay the First.
