Rema Explains Why He Avoids Flaunting His Wealth

Rema explains why he avoids flaunting wealth online, saying he does not want young people to feel pressured to match his success and lifestyle

Nigerian Afrobeats singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has explained why he avoids flaunting his wealth and achievements on social media, saying he does not want young people to feel pressured to match his success.

The singer, who spoke in an interview with Jam FM, said many young people look up to him and see his career as an example of what they hope to achieve.

Rema explained that he was mindful of the influence he had on his fans and other young people, adding that he did not want his lifestyle to make anyone feel inadequate or rush their own journey.

“A lot of young people look up to me, whether they are my fans or not. I have something they want or dream of, so I do my best not to make anyone feel bad about themselves or feel pressured,” he said.

The singer noted that comparing personal progress with another person’s achievements could create unnecessary anxiety, particularly among young people who were still finding their path.

He said some people wanted to achieve success quickly after seeing their peers doing well, even though everyone’s circumstances and opportunities were different.

“Everybody has their time but some people just want to rush it because they see their fellow young person doing well,” Rema stated.

He added that, although some people had advised him not to worry about whether his lifestyle might put pressure on others, he remained conscious of how his public image could be interpreted.

The singer extended his comments beyond celebrity culture, pointing to the pressure some young people experience from their families and society.

According to Rema, parental comparisons and expectations can influence young people’s choices, including the courses they study and the careers they pursue.

He said some students were studying subjects they did not enjoy because their parents wanted them to secure well-paying jobs.

Rema explained that his decision to keep his lifestyle relatively simple was partly informed by his concern for young people who might feel compelled to measure their progress against his.

“I just care about the kids who are under pressure,” he said, adding that he did not want anyone to rush their development or put themselves under unnecessary strain because of his achievements.

Rema also discussed his personal fashion choices, saying he generally preferred streetwear to an excessive display of designer labels.

He explained that he did not wear too many designer brands, although jewellery remained one of the more luxurious aspects of his appearance.

“The only thing that is really lavish about me may be my chains or watches,” he said.

His comments offer a glimpse into how the singer approaches fame and public influence, particularly at a time when social media can make wealth and professional success appear immediate or effortless.

Rather than presenting his achievements as a standard for others to follow, Rema said he wanted young people to understand that personal progress takes time.

His message was a reminder that success does not follow the same timetable for everyone and that constant comparison can add pressure to an already challenging journey.
