Phyna Dangote sister burial dispute: BBNaija star accuses Dangote Group of manipulation, unpaid bills and impersonating her father after tragic death
Phyna Dangote sister burial controversy has erupted after reality TV star Phyna publicly accused Dangote Group of mishandling her late sister’s funeral and engaging in manipulative practices.
The Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, whose real name is Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, took to Instagram to express her grief and anger over what she describes as a “calculated” and “insensitive” response from the Dangote Group following her sister Ruth’s tragic death.
Phyna claimed that despite public statements from the company, Dangote Group only covered hospital bills at Lagoon Hospital in Lagos, while the family bore all other costs, including the mortuary and transportation expenses from Auchi to Irrua.
“In the time of all the troubles, Dangote Group said to the public that they’ve paid all hospital bills. The only bill Dangote covered was Lagoon Hospital,” Phyna wrote.
She further alleged that on the day of the burial — 13 September 2025 — the company ignored multiple calls from the family, who were trying to confirm whether expenses had been settled. “Dangote Group did not pick up any calls from us,” she said.
Phyna also shared a letter reportedly sent by Dangote Group to her father, requesting that he sign an acknowledgement letter for burial expenses.
According to her, the company typed the letter themselves, allegedly impersonating her father, and then sent it to him for signature.
“@dangotegroup, you killed my sister, did massive PR, gave the girl’s papa money for burial, then typed an acknowledgement letter impersonating my father and sent it for him to sign,” she wrote in an emotionally charged post.
She questioned why the company didn’t simply request the family to draft an acknowledgment, calling the act “hurtful” and “calculated”.
“If you needed an acknowledgement letter or receipt for the funds you sent for the burial, you would have kindly asked for it. Why impersonate my dad?” she asked.
The controversy follows the death of Phyna’s sister in a tragic accident, which had already drawn widespread sympathy from fans and fellow celebrities.
The family’s grief has now been further complicated by what Phyna describes as public relations manipulation by a major corporation.
Although Dangote Group has yet to release an official response to the allegations, the situation has reignited public debates around corporate accountability, bereavement ethics, and celebrity influence in Nigeria.
