The Ooni of Ife welcomes Afrobeats star Asake and his mother to Ile-Ife, celebrating his achievements and marking a symbolic homecoming

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, hosted Afrobeats sensation Asake and his mother at the ancient palace in Ile-Ife on Monday, describing the visit as a symbolic homecoming.

A video shared on the monarch’s official X handle captured the singer in the company of palace chiefs and dignitaries.

In his accompanying message, Oba Ogunwusi referred to Asake as his son and celebrated his global rise, emphasising the role Ile-Ife played in shaping his formative years.

“Today fills my heart with deep joy as I welcome my son, Asake, back home to Ile-Ife. This sacred land is where he spent many of his formative years, moulded by hard work, discipline, and quiet determination,” the monarch said.

During the visit, Asake performed his hit track Lonely at the Top for the Ooni and the assembled dignitaries. The monarch also presented the singer with a piece of artwork from his personal collection.

Oba Ogunwusi paid tribute to Asake’s mother, describing her as a steadfast pillar whose love and resilience contributed significantly to his success.

“Asake’s mother has been his steadfast pillar, and I am equally delighted to welcome her back home while extending my heartfelt gratitude to her for nurturing him with love, resilience, and strength to reach this remarkable stage of life,” he added.

The Ooni further acknowledged the singer’s management team, led by his manager Lala, praising their loyalty and dedication as an embodiment of the Yoruba value of Omoluabi.

He also highlighted the contribution of Obafemi Awolowo University and Professor Toyin Ogundeji in nurturing Asake’s talents and supporting his rise as a global music icon.

Asake’s homecoming follows his return to Nigeria after two years abroad. The singer has confirmed plans to relocate to Los Angeles, United States, while continuing to champion Yoruba culture through his music.
