NCAA clarifies Kwam 1 and Emmanson cases, addressing the controversy over perceived double standards in the handling of two unruly passenger incidents.

On separate occasions, Fuji singer Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM 1, and passenger Comfort Emmanson disrupted flights operated by ValueJet and Ibom Air respectively.

KWAM 1 was deboarded for refusing to disclose the contents of a flask, leading to an indefinite flight ban, while Emmanson was filmed assaulting an Ibom Air hostess and later attacking airport officials. She is now in Kirikiri Correctional Facility until October 6.

The disparity in outcomes sparked social media debates, with Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi questioning why KWAM 1 faced no criminal charges while Emmanson was swiftly arrested and remanded.

Speaking on Monday, NCAA Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection Mike Achimugu said the authority does not control airline prosecutions, stressing that the courts decide outcomes.

He explained that in Emmanson’s case, Ibom Air acted independently based on clear video evidence, while the KWAM 1 matter allowed for investigation before the airline’s decision.

Achimugu defended the airline’s right to blacklist passengers involved in violent conduct, noting that staff deserve the same respect as passengers.

He also cited previous mid-air incidents where lack of evidence hindered enforcement.

“The NCAA did not issue an advisory to AON. AON is within its rights to ban or blacklist a passenger,” Achimugu said, emphasizing that actions taken were within industry regulations and based on available facts.
