Nigerian actor Jide Awobona has responded to widespread criticism following his emotional remarks on insecurity, after a vulnerable video he shared on social media sparked heated reactions across platforms.
The actor made the clarification in a lengthy post on his Instagram page, where he explained that the video was taken down because he was deeply emotional and affected by the rising insecurity in the country.
He said the reaction from the public contributed to what is now being described as the Jide Awobona Backlash, as online users flooded his page with mixed reactions ranging from support to harsh criticism.
Awobona stressed that Nigerians should avoid attacking one another online, especially during a period of national distress, adding that people process pain in different ways.
According to him, many people fail to recognise that public figures are also human beings who experience fear, grief and emotional strain like everyone else.
He noted that the emotional video was not his first public comment on insecurity, recalling previous posts where he expressed concern over kidnappings, including incidents involving schoolchildren in Oyo State.
The actor added that he had also personally experienced crime, including being robbed, which further shaped his perspective on the country’s security challenges.
Awobona stated that he received over a million comments following his initial video, with some users expressing frustration while others went as far as making disturbing remarks.
He described the experience as overwhelming but said he understands that many reactions are driven by pain and disappointment over the state of insecurity.
The Jide Awobona Backlash, he said, highlights a growing tension between public expression and online judgment, especially when celebrities speak on sensitive national issues.
He also pointed out what he sees as a contradiction in public behaviour, noting that many critics still continue their daily lives despite expressing anger online.
The actor argued that expectations placed on public figures are often unrealistic, as they are expected to remain silent, detached or unaffected by national tragedies.
He further emphasised that celebrities also attend to personal responsibilities and emotional struggles while still engaging with societal issues.
In a wider context, singer Davido recently addressed his relationship with Seyi Tinubu after criticism over his comments on insecurity, saying he has long-standing personal ties and continues to voice concerns privately.
Meanwhile, several Nigerian entertainers also marked Children’s Day with emotional messages, mourning the abduction of pupils in Oyo State and calling for urgent government action.
Actors and filmmakers, including prominent Nollywood voices, have continued to use their platforms to demand improved security and accountability.
