Don Jazzy Reflects on Afrobeats’ Rapid Global Rise

Don Jazzy highlights Afrobeats’ rapid growth, rising production costs, and learning curve, citing international influence and industry evolution

Music executive Don Jazzy has spotlighted the swift growth of Afrobeats, describing the genre as relatively young in the global music scene.

Speaking on X, he emphasised that industry stakeholders are in a continuous learning phase, adapting to innovations and evolving trends.

Jazzy pointed to the rising costs of producing Afrobeats music videos as evidence of the genre’s rapid evolution.

He noted that video production, once considered costly at 20 million Naira six years ago, now sometimes exceeds $100,000.

The Mavin Records founder also highlighted his eagerness to learn from industry and business leaders.

He cited Burna Boy’s international performances and Dangote’s expertise in managing large-scale projects in Lagos as valuable sources of insight.

“This our beloved Afrobeats is still a baby genre in the grand scheme of things. We are all still learning every day as the game is ever-changing. If you told me six years ago that an Afrobeats video could cost over 20 million Naira, I would say, ahh, that’s way too much. But behold, some of us have shot videos over 100,000 dollars,” he wrote.

Jazzy encouraged emerging music executives to pay attention and learn from experienced practitioners.

“If Burna tells me what it takes to do multiple international stadium shows, I will take notes because I have never run it before. That said, my people, if I tell you how to run a successful record label in Nigeria, take notes even if na small note, cos we no plenty wey don run am,” he added.
