Davido Claims Nigerian Music Industry Would Be Boring

Davido claims the Nigerian music industry would be boring without him, sparking mixed reactions from fans and industry observers

Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has claimed that the Nigerian music industry would have been “boring” without him.

The statement was made in a post on his X handle, where he wrote: “Imagine no Davido…. Sht [the music industry] would have been boring AF.”

The post elicited mixed reactions online, with some fans agreeing and others arguing that the singer may be overestimating his contribution to the industry.

This is not the first time Davido has claimed to be central to Nigerian music. In an interview with Apple Music in April 2025, he said the industry “shut down” when he took a three-month break from social media in November 2022 following the tragic death of his son, Ifeanyi Adeleke.

He recalled that both fans and trolls were urging him to return during the hiatus.

Davido rose to prominence in 2011 with his hit song “Dami Duro,” at a time when the Nigerian music scene was witnessing the rise of young Afrobeats stars, led by Wizkid.

His entry, some observers say, brought increased rivalry and competition among artists. Veteran producer Samkleff recently commented that before Davido’s stardom, there was more mutual respect among Nigerian musicians.

Despite differing opinions, Davido’s post highlights his belief in his influence on the growth and global appeal of Nigerian music over the past decade.
