Davido Explains Collaboration With Omah Lay

Davido explains his Omah Lay collaboration on ‘With You’, revealing it stemmed from a misunderstanding and viral livestream moment

Afrobeats superstar Davido has revealed the story behind his collaboration with singer Omah Lay, explaining that the partnership emerged from a misunderstanding about their relationship.

Davido made the disclosure while recounting events that led to the creation of their song, ‘With You’, featured on his fifth studio album, 5ive.

According to Davido, Omah Lay had previously believed the DMW boss “hated” him, until Davido publicly played one of his tracks during a viral livestream with American streamer Kai Cenat in Lagos.

“How Omah Lay and I got together was, Kai Cenat came to Nigeria and I was driving him to the club. Then Omah Lay’s song came on and he was like, ‘Who is this?’ And I said, ‘Oh! This is Omah Lay, he is hot,’” Davido said.

The following day, Omah Lay tweeted that he had assumed Davido disliked him. Davido responded via direct message, saying, “Why would you think I hate you? We’ve never met.”

The interaction led to the exchange of contact details and multiple studio sessions. They recorded four songs together, with ‘With You’ chosen as the track to release.

‘With You’ has since become one of the standout tracks on 5ive and is nominated for Best African Music Performance at the 2026 Grammy Awards.
