Daniel Day-Lewis Retirement U-turn has taken fans by surprise after the Oscar-winning actor revealed he never truly meant to retire from acting.

Speaking to Rolling Stone on Wednesday, the 68-year-old British actor opened up about his unexpected departure from the industry and the real reasons behind his break.

Contrary to previous public statements, Day-Lewis admitted he simply stepped away to explore other pursuits — not because he planned to retire for good.

“I would have done well to just keep my mouth shut,” he said. “It just seems like such grandiose gibberish to talk about. I never intended to retire, really. I just stopped doing that particular type of work so I could do some other work.”

Day-Lewis, known for his intensely immersive roles and rare public appearances, also touched on the emotional aspect of his decision, particularly regarding filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson’s longtime collaborator, Saoirse Ronan.

“I had some residual sadness because I knew Ronan was going to go on to make films, and I was walking away from that,” he said. “I thought, wouldn’t it be lovely if we could do something together and find a way of maybe containing it, so that it didn’t necessarily have to be something that required all the paraphernalia of a big production.”

The Daniel Day-Lewis Retirement U-turn has reignited speculation about a potential return to screen.
