Salis revealed that Chief Kanran had reached out to him on July 11, 2025, sharing his excitement about celebrating his 70th birthday and marking 55 years on stage.

But just two weeks later, the mood turned grim. On July 27, the actor sent a distressing voice note, revealing he was suffering from appendicitis and urgently needed ₦700,000 for surgery.

“On the same July 27, I immediately sent him ₦350,000 to cover the balance,” Salis recounted. “He was so grateful. On August 1, he sent another message of appreciation.”

However, tragedy struck just three days later, as news of Chief Kanran’s death stunned the Nigerian arts community.

Salis, visibly shaken, described the loss as “shocking, lamentable, and devastating.” He later contributed financially to the actor’s burial on August 18. Reflecting on the actor’s life and legacy, Salis praised Chief Kanran’s unmatched talent, calling him “an iconic prodigy who bestrode the Nigerian stage like a colossus.”

Chief Kanran, best known for his unforgettable role as Alaafin Kanran, endured heartbreaking hardship in his later years.

He lost his home, studio, and cars to a fire, became homeless, and slept in a church after the passing of his two wives.
