Bolaji Ogunmola Speaks on Industry Stereotyping and Career Struggles

Bolaji Ogunmola has spoken about being stereotyped in Nollywood and how she overcame early career limitations to build her path

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Bolaji Ogunmola has spoken about the challenges she faced in the early stages of her career, revealing that she was often stereotyped and restricted to certain roles in the film industry.

Speaking during an interview on Jay-On-Air, the actress said she was initially boxed into limited character types due to perceptions about her appearance, particularly her skin tone and body shape.

She explained that during that period, the industry was heavily influenced by a preference for light-skinned actresses, which affected the kind of roles she was offered.

According to her, she was frequently pushed towards “side chick” roles, a pattern she described as frustrating and creatively limiting.

“It was almost like they wanted to put me in a box. I am dark-skinned. There was a time when light-skinned people were reigning, and they told me I was very curvy and tried to limit me to ‘side chick’ roles. That went on for a while, and I didn’t like it,” she said.

Bolaji Ogunmola noted that despite the setbacks, she remained persistent and continued to push for better opportunities in the industry.

The actress also reflected on her decision not to pursue a conventional corporate career, stating that she has always preferred creating her own path.

“I just wanted my life to have meaning at that time. I am not somebody who likes to sit at home; I wanted to do something,” she added.

She praised individuals working in the corporate space but maintained that her personality is better suited to entrepreneurship and the creative industry.

Her comments have sparked renewed conversations around typecasting and representation in Nollywood, particularly the experiences of dark-skinned actresses navigating the industry.
