Blaqbonez says charts don’t define real talent

Blaqbonez says charts don’t define real talent, stressing that streaming numbers can be manipulated and shouldn’t measure artistic value.

Blaqbonez has weighed in on the growing debate around streaming numbers and chart rankings, insisting that artists should not be judged solely by their positions on music charts.

The Nigerian rapper made the statement while responding to a fan who accused him of hypocrisy for celebrating his chart success despite previously questioning the credibility of streaming figures.

In his reply, Blaqbonez clarified that while charts are exciting and hold significance, they should not serve as the ultimate measure of musical worth or creative ability.

“I never talked down on the charts; it’ll always be exciting,” he wrote on social media. “But no artist should be defined by it. Most of the artists I’m currently listening to in Naija are not up on our charts.”

He went on to criticise the tendency to label musicians as failures based on chart positions, noting that streaming data can easily be manipulated.

“You guys are quick to label someone a failure depending on numbers that we know can easily be manipulated. Use your ears sometimes — if something is good, it’s good, that’s all I’m saying,” Blaqbonez added.

The rapper, known for his outspoken views and genre-bending artistry, has often used his platform to challenge conventional industry narratives and advocate for authenticity in music.

His latest comments echo concerns shared by several Nigerian artists about the credibility of streaming charts and the rising influence of “streaming farms” in shaping public perception.
