Baba Fryo Slams Wizkid for Comparing Himself to Fela

Baba Fryo criticises Wizkid for claiming he is bigger than Fela, calling the comparison disrespectful to the late Afrobeat pioneer’s legacy

Veteran Nigerian musician Baba Fryo has criticised Afrobeat star Wizkid over claims that he is “bigger than Fela Anikulapo-Kuti,” remarks that have reignited debate across Nigeria’s music community.

The controversy began after Seun Kuti, Fela’s son, publicly rebuked Wizkid’s fans for drawing comparisons between the contemporary superstar and his father, calling such arguments “an insult to Fela’s legacy.”

Wizkid subsequently responded on Instagram, declaring he was “bigger than Fela” and mocking Seun in a series of posts.

Baba Fryo condemned the comments on social media, saying the comparison reflected poorly on younger generations.

“I just dey shame for this Gen Z. How can these kids compare a kid to an elder?” he said.

He emphasised that Fela was not only a musician but also a multi-instrumentalist and revolutionary figure whose influence spanned decades.

“Fela wasn’t just an artiste but a full-time musician, and he remained relevant for over 30 years until the day he died,” Baba Fryo added.

Drawing cultural parallels, he noted that similar disrespect would be unthinkable in other music traditions.

“A Jamaican artiste would never do such to Bob Marley. I dey shame for this youth. Call Gen Zero sense. Mtcheew.”

The feud has reignited discussions about respect for music pioneers, generational gaps in recognising artistic legacy, and how contemporary performers engage with icons who shaped the industry.

Many fans and critics have supported Baba Fryo’s stance, arguing that Fela Kuti’s cultural, political, and musical contributions demand reverence regardless of modern stars’ global success.
