The mother of Nigerian music star Ahmed Ololade, popularly known as Asake, on Wednesday, March 19, 2026, in Lagos, Nigeria, revealed that the singer declined a planned opportunity to study in the United Kingdom despite financial preparations already made, in what has now become a widely discussed Asake UK study rejection story.

However, she said she was surprised when Asake insisted on pursuing his education in Nigeria instead, opting to attend Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State.

According to her, the decision initially caused concern, as she was unsure about his strong-willed nature and whether he would cope well in an academic environment closer to home.

She added that a family acquaintance, Yoruba actor Muyideen Oladapo, popularly known as Lala, played a key role in convincing her to support his admission into the university.

The singer eventually enrolled at OAU, where he studied Performing Arts, a course that would later influence his creative direction and music career.

She described the moment as emotional, recalling how her son returned home insisting on going to school locally despite earlier plans for overseas education.

Asake, who also appeared on the podcast, reflected on his journey and discussed aspects of his upbringing, including the meaning behind his nickname “Giran”, a Yoruba word associated with stubbornness, which he embraced as part of his identity.
