Senegalese-American singer and music executive Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam, popularly known as Akon, has claimed that many musicians are not as wealthy as they appear, arguing that the most famous faces in the industry are often the least financially rewarded.

Akon made the remarks during an interview with Hip Hop Eye, where he addressed what he described as widespread misconceptions about wealth in the music industry.

According to him, the glamorous lifestyles displayed by many musicians on social media and in music videos do not always reflect their financial reality.

“In the music industry, the artist is the last to get paid. He is the broke one but he is the most famous. If you want to be broke and famous, be the artist,” he said.

Akon further explained that greater financial rewards often go to executives and professionals working behind the scenes, including producers, songwriters, managers, agents and attorneys.

He described the broader entertainment ecosystem as one with multiple income opportunities, noting that those who operate outside the spotlight often maximise earnings more effectively.

The singer’s comments add to ongoing discussions about transparency and earnings within the global music industry, where debates over royalties, contracts and revenue distribution continue to attract scrutiny.
