Adekunle Gold Slams Bank Over First-Class Giveaway

Adekunle Gold calls out Wema Bank for allegedly using his ‘first-class giveaway’ concept in their ad campaign without consent

Nigerian Afrobeats star Adekunle Gold, popularly known as AG Baby, has taken a firm stand after alleging that Wema Bank used his viral ‘first-class giveaway’ idea for marketing without seeking his permission.

The giveaway, launched by Adekunle Gold, was aimed at recognizing and rewarding individuals who graduated with first-class honors by gifting them cash as a token of appreciation for their academic efforts.

The initiative received wide praise for celebrating educational excellence.

However, things took a turn when Wema Bank, through its digital banking platform ALAT, appeared to use the same concept in a promotional message. The advert read:

“AG Baby no send you first class gift? No worries, ALAT’s got you covered. Enjoy up to 70% off your favorite brands this weekend via eVouchers on the ALAT app – it’s no crime to not have a first-class degree.”

Dear @wemabank @alat_ng, when did this start? You’ll be hearing from my people.

Reacting strongly, Adekunle Gold took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his displeasure over the use of his initiative in a corporate campaign without credit or approval.

“Dear @wemabank @alat_ng, when did this start? You’ll be hearing from my people,” he warned in his post.

Fans and supporters have since rallied behind the singer, criticizing the bank for what many describe as an unethical appropriation of a personal and impactful idea.

The incident has reignited conversations about intellectual property respect in brand marketing, especially when it involves public figures and original social initiatives.
