Wiz Khalifa Sentenced to Nine Months in Romanian Prison

American rapper Wiz Khalifa has been sentenced to nine months in prison by a Romanian court over a drug possession case linked to his on-stage performance in the country last year.

The ruling, handed down in absentia, followed a successful appeal by Romanian prosecutors against an earlier judgment that had only fined the rapper.

Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, was arrested in July 2024 after allegedly smoking marijuana during a music festival in Costinești, a popular seaside town.

He was briefly detained, later released, and publicly apologised, emphasising that he meant no disrespect to Romania.

An initial decision by the Constanța Tribunal imposed a fine of 3,000 lei (approximately $690). Prosecutors from Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) challenged the verdict, leading to the court’s final sentencing.

The court ruled Khalifa guilty of unlawful possession of dangerous drugs for personal use. Under Romanian law, drug possession for personal use can attract prison terms ranging from three months to two years, depending on the classification of the substance.

Wiz Khalifa remains in the United States, and it is currently unclear whether Romanian authorities will pursue extradition or enforcement of the prison term.

Romania maintains strict anti-drug regulations, and the case underscores the country’s rigorous stance on cannabis, which is illegal for both recreational and medical purposes.
