Veteran Kannywood actress Wasila Isma’il has died at the age of 46 after a prolonged illness, her former husband Al-Amin Chiroma confirmed on Sunday, May 25, 2026.

Chiroma announced her passing in a social media post, stating that the actress died at FOMWAN Hospital in Kaduna, where she had been receiving treatment.

The late actress, born in Kaduna State, was widely recognised for her influential roles in Hausa-language films and her contribution to the growth of the Kannywood film industry.

Wasila Isma’il rose to prominence after starring in the 1999 film Wasila, directed by Yakubu Lere and featuring popular actor Ali Nuhu, a role that helped cement her place in the industry.

The actress began her acting career in 1998 with the film Jinin Masoya, marking the start of a journey that would see her become a familiar face in Hausa cinema.

She later gained wider recognition following her performance in Wasila, a production that significantly boosted her popularity across Northern Nigeria.

In an earlier interview, she revealed that she had requested a change in the film’s title from Jamila to Wasila, explaining that she wanted a name that would not negatively affect her personal identity.
