Veteran Nollywood actor Tom Njemanze has passed away following a prolonged battle with prostate cancer.

The respected performer died on Friday, marking the end of a remarkable era in Nigerian cinema.

The news of his death was shared by filmmaker Stanley Ontop on Saturday via Instagram.

“It’s another sad period as we just received news from Tom Njemanze’s family that he has succumbed to his ailment and passed on yesterday. May his soul RIP. It’s well. We tried to save him Buh God knows best. Nollywood lost another legend. Ije Uwa,” he wrote.

Njemanze had been battling the illness for some time. Stanley Ontop had previously made a public appeal for financial assistance to support the actor’s surgery, urging fans and industry colleagues to come to his aid.

Rising to fame in the early 1990s, Tom Njemanze became a household name through standout roles in iconic Nollywood films such as Pounds and Dollars, Atosa, Issakaba, Osuofia in London, and Brain Box.

We tried to save him, but God knows best. May his soul rest in peace.

His performances left a lasting impression on audiences and earned him the admiration of both fans and peers.

“He was one of the actors that gave Nollywood its original voice,” a close colleague shared. “His range and delivery made every role believable.”

Though his final years were marked by illness, Njemanze’s contributions to the Nigerian film industry will remain etched in its history.
