The backlash followed President Bola Tinubu’s announcement of cash awards in US dollars to the Super Falcons and D’Tigress in recognition of their recent international victories.

While acknowledging the president’s support for Nigerian sportswomen, ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi said the gesture undermines Nigeria’s monetary sovereignty.

“We find it strange that the President has repeatedly shown disregard for the Nigerian sovereign currency by announcing awards in US Dollars,” Abdullahi said.

The party referenced the National Orientation Agency (NOA)’s campaign against naira abuse and urged Tinubu to set a better example by respecting the national currency.
