In a heartfelt interview with TVC, Seyi Shay—real name Deborah Oluwaseyi Joshua—explained that the death of Sound Sultan was not only devastating on a personal level but also left her without the will to continue creating music.
“During the filming of Nigerian Idol, my mentor, best friend, and father figure passed away.
Sound Sultan was the person who brought me into the Nigerian music industry,” she shared.
Seyi Shay revealed that Sound Sultan was the first person she lived with upon relocating to Nigeria, staying with him and his wife in FESTAC for over a year. “He co-signed me, introduced me to the industry, and made sure people looked out for me. His death just tore me apart,” she said.

“I was supposed to fly to New York that weekend to see him. He asked me to bring him something. When I didn’t get the chance, it just broke me. I lost peace of mind, and I didn’t feel mentally strong enough to keep going in music.”
She continued, “I told myself there’s no way I’m going to have my child in the toxic music industry I was in, under constant scrutiny. So, I took a break.”
The singer’s honesty sheds light on the intense emotional toll that Sound Sultan’s passing took on those closest to him—not just as a public figure, but as a mentor, protector, and friend.
Since her break, Seyi Shay has been gradually returning to the spotlight, with fans hopeful for a full comeback.
