Ruth Kadiri, Nollywood actress and producer, explained on Sunday, August 31, 2026, why she chose to keep her marriage private, revealing that fear of the unknown and concerns about public scrutiny shaped the decision.

Kadiri made the revelation during a recent episode of the Dear Ife podcast, where she reflected on her early reservations about marriage and the decision she and her husband made to keep their wedding deliberately small.

The actress said she had what she described as a phobia of marriage and was uncertain about whether the commitment would stand the test of time.

“I had a phobia of marriage. I was battling with the fear of the unknown and asking myself, ‘Am I going to make this decision and everything will now scatter?’” Kadiri said.

Rather than expose the relationship to intense public attention, she decided that privacy would give the marriage room to develop away from unnecessary pressure.

Kadiri said her husband understood and supported the decision, allowing both of them to agree on a modest wedding attended by just 50 people.

She explained that 25 guests were invited by her husband, while she selected the other 25.

“I wasn’t really ready to have a public marriage, and my husband was okay with it. Also, I didn’t want a lot of drama regarding my relationship,” she said.

The choice offered the couple a quiet beginning at a time when Kadiri was already building a visible career in Nollywood.

The actress also suggested that, had the circumstances been different, she might have opted for an even simpler ceremony.

“If I were abroad, I guess we would have just probably walked to the registry and gotten married,” she said.

Kadiri’s decision reflects a broader reality for public figures, whose personal relationships can attract considerable attention once they become known to the public.

For the actress, keeping her marriage away from the spotlight was less about secrecy and more about protecting a significant personal decision while she worked through her own uncertainties.

Kadiri married in a private ceremony in 2018. The couple welcomed their first daughter in August 2019 and their second daughter in July 2022.

Over the years, she has continued to balance family life with a successful career as an actress and producer, while maintaining a relatively guarded approach to her personal affairs.

Her latest comments provide a rare glimpse into the thinking behind that boundary and show how deliberately she and her husband approached the early stages of their marriage.
