Ronke Oshodi shares her views on polygamy, saying she would accept her husband taking a second wife if he could support both families
Veteran Nollywood actress Ronke Oshodi Oke has opened up about her views on polygamy, saying she would not prevent her husband from marrying another woman if he had the financial capacity to provide for both families.
Oshodi made the disclosure during an interview with Behind The Fame TV, where she discussed marriage, relationships and what she considers important when a man decides to take another wife.
The actress said she would accept her husband marrying a second woman, but would not be comfortable living under the same roof with her.
For Oshodi, a separate home would be necessary to maintain boundaries and avoid unnecessary tension within the family.
“A man has to respect his wife because if he wants to marry a second wife, he should bring her home and introduce her to the first wife properly.”
She said the financial ability of the husband would also be a major consideration.
“If my husband can take care of the second wife and he has the financial capacity, I see no reason he can’t marry a second wife.”
Oshodi stressed that she would have no major objection as long as her husband’s decision did not affect the financial support he provides to her.
“If marrying a second wife will not stop him from giving me money, he should go ahead and do it.”
Her comments have opened another conversation about the realities of polygamous relationships in Nigeria, where attitudes towards multiple marriages are shaped by culture, religion and personal circumstances.
The actress’s position is not, however, an unconditional endorsement of polygamy. She specifically identified separate accommodation as a boundary she would insist upon.
Oshodi also questioned the assumption that a man having only one wife necessarily means he is faithful.
“Some men are married to one wife, but they have a lot of girlfriends.”
She suggested that, from her perspective, openly acknowledging another marriage could be preferable to a husband maintaining relationships secretly outside his home.
The actress went further in describing her personal outlook on men’s relationships, saying she would allow her husband to marry a second wife and would not attempt to control his sexual relationships with other women.
“I can allow my husband to marry a second wife, and he’s free to have sex with other girls.”
Oshodi then added a light-hearted but pointed comment about her general distrust of men, saying she even applies that caution to her son.
“I don’t trust men at all, including my son, even though he’s only 13 years old now.”
The remarks have generated discussion about trust, fidelity, financial responsibility and the boundaries that can exist within polygamous marriages.
Polygamy remains a sensitive subject in Nigeria. While it is accepted in some cultural and religious settings, many Nigerians reject it on personal, emotional or religious grounds.
Oshodi’s comments therefore represent her personal perspective rather than a universal position on marriage.
Her emphasis is on financial responsibility, respect between spouses and maintaining separate households where a second marriage is involved.
The veteran actress’s remarks also underline the increasingly open way Nigerian entertainers discuss marriage and family issues in interviews, often bringing personal perspectives into wider conversations about relationships and society.
