American TV host and comedian Ellen DeGeneres has revealed the reason behind her recent move from the United States to the United Kingdom.

Speaking during a live chat with Richard Bacon at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, near her new home in the Cotswolds, Ellen shared that the decision to relocate permanently was influenced by the outcome of the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
“We arrived the day before the election, woke up to crying emojis from friends, and I knew he won,” she said, referring to Donald Trump’s victory.

Initially planning to spend only a few months each year in the UK, Ellen and her wife, Portia de Rossi, decided to make the move permanent due to growing concerns over LGBTQ+ rights in the U.S.
She expressed alarm over efforts to roll back same-sex marriage and other LGBTQ+ protections, saying the political climate made them feel unsafe.

Their new life in the Cotswolds offers a more peaceful and welcoming environment, Ellen added, as they look to the UK for a sense of stability and inclusion.
