Rema HEIS rebranding: Nigerian singer says his switch to smoking, tattoos and darker aesthetics was artistic, inspired by anime character Itachi Uchiha

Nigerian music star Rema has opened up about the motives behind his bold rebranding leading up to the release of his sophomore album, HEIS, in 2024.

Marking the album’s one-year anniversary on Thursday, the singer took to social media to explain that his switch to tattoos, smoking, and darker fashion choices was purely a form of artistic expression, not a reflection of personal lifestyle changes.

According to Rema, the controversial changes — including the abandonment of his signature teddy bear and mask — were part of a symbolic narrative.

Taking to his official X account, he wrote:

“The cover was inspired by Itachi in Naruto. The Truth masked as illusion, Love buried under what y’all thought was betrayal (change of sound, smoking, looks, aesthetics & choice of colour).”

The singer emphasised that many of the changes were misinterpreted by fans as a personal transformation, when in reality they were part of the thematic storytelling around HEIS.

The Rema HEIS rebranding sparked mixed reactions in 2024, with fans divided over his darker visuals and sonic direction. However, Rema has now made it clear that these were creative decisions, not behavioural shifts.

This echoes a similar stance taken by fellow artist Shallipopi, who stated last year that cigarettes in his photos and videos were used strictly for aesthetic purposes, not as a reflection of smoking in real life.
