Former President Olusegun Obasanjo praises Omotola Jalade Ekeinde as a national treasure at the premiere of her directorial debut, Mother’s Love
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has described acclaimed actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde as a national “treasure” whose talent should be harnessed for the development and growth of Nigeria.
Obasanjo made the remarks at the premiere of Mother’s Love, the actress’ directorial debut, held at Alliance Française Lagos on Sunday.
The event attracted prominent figures from the entertainment industry and beyond.
Speaking warmly about Jalade-Ekeinde, the former president emphasised the importance of encouraging creative talents to contribute meaningfully to national development.
“We have a treasure that we must keep and utilise for the development and growth of Nigeria, and there are many like that,” Obasanjo said.
The 88-year-old former military head of state engaged actively with guests, posed for photographs, and spoke to journalists, signalling a rare and high-profile endorsement of Nollywood.
His attendance quickly sparked reactions on social media, with users praising the show of support and recognising the industry’s growing global significance.
The premiere also celebrated Jalade-Ekeinde’s 30-year journey in Nollywood.
Since beginning her acting career in the early 1990s, she has appeared in over 100 productions, including Mortal Inheritance, Ije, and Alter Ego.
With Mother’s Love, she takes a step behind the camera, directing a film that explores themes of sacrifice and family, mirroring her own experiences as a mother of four and wife to Capt. Matthew Ekeinde.
The movie stars Olumide Owuru, Noray Nehita, and Ifeanyi Kalu, and marks a milestone in her career.
Jalade-Ekeinde joins a growing number of Nigerian filmmakers, including Kunle Afolayan, Funke Akindele, Niyi Akinmolayan, Toyin Abraham, and Genevieve Nnaji, who have expanded their creative roles, further strengthening Nollywood’s cultural and economic influence globally.
