Princess Nwamaka Chigbo, Abuja lawyer, was kidnapped and brutally killed. Police are investigating while family seeks justice
The family of Princess Nwamaka Mediatrix Chigbo, an Abuja-based lawyer, has confirmed her death following a kidnapping by unidentified assailants on Monday, 5 January 2026.
Before her abduction, Barrister Nwamaka was on the phone with her sister Anthonia when her call was interrupted by a client.
Upon returning, Anthonia reportedly heard her sister’s distress before the line went dead and became unreachable.
Family members immediately attempted to contact Nwamaka and her alleged abductors.
When a call finally connected, a male voice issued a ransom demand of three million Naira in English and Hausa before abruptly terminating the call.
The Chigbo family contacted police authorities, including the Inspector General of Police and the FCT Police Commissioner, who linked them to the Commander of the Scorpion Squad, responsible for kidnapping cases in Abuja.
The Commander assured the family that the kidnappers were being tracked and might release the lawyer after collecting the ransom.
Attempts to reach the kidnappers directly revealed horrifying cries from Nwamaka, who reportedly pleaded for her life before the call went dead.
The family maintained contact with police throughout Monday night to monitor rescue efforts.
At 4 am on Tuesday, 6 January, when the family followed up, the Commander expressed surprise at Nwamaka’s absence.
Later, he informed the family that a critically injured woman had been admitted to an Abuja specialist hospital.
Maureen Chigbo, Nwamaka’s elder sister, flew from Lagos to Abuja and identified her sister’s body in the mortuary.
The body showed signs of torture, including bruises, swollen eyes, and a cracked skull.
Police have assured the family that the case is under investigation and that the culprits will be apprehended.
Nwamaka Chigbo was an active member and former treasurer of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abuja; a member of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (IFWL) and the Global Association of Female Lawyers (GAFA); and a former president of the Catholic Lawyers Association, Abuja.
She was also vice president of the Infant Jesus Association and involved in several other religious groups.
The family has expressed gratitude to police, friends, colleagues, and well-wishers for their support and prayers. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
