Mary Njoku highlights the disconnect between polished CVs and actual candidate skills, warning companies face challenges finding suitable employees

Actress and filmmaker Mary Njoku has expressed concern over the growing disconnect between impressive CVs and companies’ difficulties in finding suitable employees.

In an Instagram post, Njoku said many CVs appear solid and well-written, but interviews often reveal a mismatch between claimed capabilities and real-world performance.

“Every day, I see people without jobs. Every day, I see impressive CVs. And every day I see companies struggling to hire good people. And I’m genuinely confused,” she wrote.

She described CVs as “marketing documents” that no longer accurately reflect a person’s skills.

“Titles are inflated, responsibilities are aspirational, and polish has replaced depth. There’s a real disconnect between what looks good on paper and what shows up in the room,” Njoku added.

The filmmaker emphasised that the issue is not about intelligence or effort, but about the misalignment between candidates’ documented experience and practical competence.
