Veteran actor Isiah Whitlock Jr. has died at the age of 71, New York, December 31, 2025.

His manager, Brian Liebman, confirmed that the acclaimed performer passed away peacefully on Tuesday following a brief illness.

Whitlock rose to prominence for his portrayal of the shrewd and corrupt Senator Clay Davis on HBO’s acclaimed series The Wire.

The character became iconic not only for political scheming but also for the drawn-out catchphrase “sheeeeit,” which Whitlock later revealed was inspired by his uncle and crafted personally by him.

The role remains one of the most memorable performances in television history.

Beyond The Wire, Whitlock enjoyed a career spanning decades across film, television, and stage.

He frequently collaborated with filmmaker Spike Lee, appearing in projects including BlacKkKlansman and Da 5 Bloods, in which he portrayed a Vietnam War veteran.

Whitlock also demonstrated versatility in comedy, notably as Secretary of Defense George Maddox on HBO’s Veep.

His extensive credits included appearances in Goodfellas, The Chappelle Show, and numerous theatre productions, earning him a reputation as a dependable, scene-stealing character actor capable of elevating any project.

Tributes to Whitlock poured in following news of his death. Spike Lee described him as his “dear beloved brother,” while Liebman remembered him as “a brilliant actor and an even better person.”
