In a series of emotional Instagram posts, Ganiyu Morufu, popularly known as Ijoba Lande, described how the fabricated video was weaponised to demand ₦5 million from him.

According to the actor, the video has already been circulated to several of his professional contacts and benefactors, severely damaging his public image and income.

“I’m calling on the Nigerian government to act fast on the use of AI to create videos,” he said. “If not regulated, it will cause a lot of damage in this country.”

Lande insisted that the person in the video is not him, describing the clip as a product of artificial intelligence manipulated to destroy his reputation.

The blackmail has left him emotionally shaken.

“Someone sent me a video and threatened me. In the video, I was naked and in bed with a married woman,” he shared.

While the identity of the blackmailer remains unknown, the incident highlights growing fears about AI abuse, especially deepfake content — hyper-realistic synthetic videos that are often used maliciously to impersonate public figures or private individuals.

This isn’t the first time Ijoba Lande has made headlines for personal challenges, but the gravity of this case — involving technology misuse and alleged extortion — marks a disturbing turn in Nigeria’s celebrity culture.
