The celebrity business support Nigeria debate was sparked in a video posted on Laura Ikeji’s Instagram page on Thursday, where she expressed frustration over what she sees as a disconnect between online admiration for celebrities and real-life financial support for their brands.

Laura Ikeji argued that while Nigerians actively engage with celebrity music, films and lifestyles on social media, they are often reluctant to purchase products or services offered by the same personalities.

She compared the situation with international entertainment figures such as Rihanna, Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian, noting that their business ventures benefit significantly from strong fan-backed consumer support.

According to Laura Ikeji, this lack of consistent patronage contributes to the collapse of many celebrity businesses within a few years of launch.

She further claimed that even within the entertainment industry, celebrities rarely support each other’s enterprises, a trend she described as damaging to growth.

The entrepreneur also stated that investors are often cautious about funding celebrity-led ventures, citing concerns around financial discipline and sustainability.

In her remarks, Laura Ikeji made a passionate appeal to Nigerians to back the brands of celebrities they admire, stressing that stronger consumer support could help sustain more successful businesses in the long term.

“I am not a celebrity. I sell, we do great at LB. Think about it. Celebrities should be selling millions in merch,” she said in the video, underscoring her point.

The comments have since generated mixed reactions online, with some users agreeing with her perspective while others argued that product quality and pricing, rather than celebrity status, should determine consumer support.
