Ariyike Dimples shares her church experience that led her to stop attending for three years, citing judgment over her dressing

Nigerian media personality Ariyike Owolagba, popularly known as Ariyike Dimples, has revealed a church experience that prompted her to stop attending for three years.

Speaking on the Open Up podcast, Ariyike recounted that she felt judged by an elder in her community church over her choice of clothing. She explained that the incident left her feeling unwelcome and unfairly criticised by the congregation.

“In my community church, you see only elderly people. You barely see the young ones. The young ones have gone to other churches. It was too serious. Yes, you can have your doctrines, but there is a way you can simplify it for young people and take them in without judging them,” Ariyike said.

The actress stated that the situation escalated when an elder reported her to her father, claiming her outfit was indecent.

Ariyike said she had to take a photo of the skirt and send it to her mother to prove she was not dressing inappropriately.

“I chose to avoid the community church so that they won’t see me,” she recalled.

Despite the judgment and her decision to stop attending church, Ariyike stressed that her faith in God remained intact.

She said the experience has not affected her personal spirituality, emphasising that her departure was a response to the community’s attitudes, not her beliefs.

The revelation highlights ongoing conversations in Nigeria about inclusivity and generational gaps in religious communities, with younger worshippers seeking spaces where they feel welcomed and understood.
