Abuja poet sells collection for record ₦1m at bold launch

An Abuja poetry launch blending music and spoken word saw a collection sell for a record ₦1 million, redefining how poetry is presented in Nigeria

A bold reimagining of the traditional book launch saw a poetry collection sell for a record ₦1 million in Abuja on Friday night, as a genre-bending literary event merged poetry, live music and performance art into a single immersive experience.

The Abuja poetry launch took place at Dunadura Restaurant, where the poet unveiled two new collections during a live performance that departed sharply from the conventional format of readings and signings.

Instead of static recitations, the evening was built around what the poet described as “sonic architecture”, a concept that deconstructed familiar songs and rebuilt them through spoken word.

The audience, drawn from Abuja’s creative and cultural community, filled the intimate venue as poetry unfolded alongside live vocals, reshaping how literary work was presented and received.

A central feature of the night was a collaboration with a vocalist whose live renditions of popular Nigerian and international songs formed the emotional backbone for the poetry.

One of the most striking moments came during a reinterpretation of “You’re Beautiful”, as verses from a poem about vulnerability and emotional surrender were layered over the melody, blurring the line between song and spoken word.

Later, a nostalgic turn to “Olufunmi” by Styl-Plus was paired with poetry reflecting on memory, loss and emotional erasure, shifting the mood from romance to quiet introspection.

The performance also moved into social commentary as a rendition of “Fire on the Mountain” became a reflection on national trauma, with references to unresolved tragedies and the fleeting nature of public outrage.

Lines recalling events such as Chibok and Baga were delivered in hushed tones, transforming the familiar song into a solemn meditation on collective memory and grief.

The emotional peak of the night came when a copy of the twin poetry collection was auctioned and sold for ₦1 million, a moment that many in attendance described as a breakthrough for poetry as both a cultural and commercial art form.

Speaking at the event, the poet said the intention was to make poetry more accessible and emotionally immediate.

“To make poetry travel in 2025, it cannot just be read; it must be felt,” the poet said.

“The fastest way to the heart is through a melody people already know.”

The event marked a turning point in how literary work can be staged in contemporary Nigeria, combining performance, sound and narrative into a single, shared experience.

Organisers said the format was designed not only to showcase poetry but to invite audiences into it, allowing words to live beyond the printed page and into collective space.
