Tope Alabi honours Toun Soetan gospel legacy, celebrating her 40-year ministry and lasting impact on gospel music

Gospel singer Tope Alabi paid tribute to veteran gospel musician Toun Soetan, who passed away at 73, in a heartfelt Instagram post on 15 March 2026.

Alabi described Soetan as “a true spiritual mother and a matriarch in gospel music.”

“Her life was a reflection of Christ, and her impact in the gospel music ministry will never be forgotten. She lived for Christ and preached Him through her life and music,” Alabi wrote.

“Though we will miss her, we are comforted knowing she has gone to be with the Lord. Rest well, Mama. Your legacy lives on.”

Gospel comedian Woli Agba confirmed Soetan’s death on Friday via social media, prompting an outpouring of condolences from fans and fellow musicians alike.

Soetan, renowned for songs such as “Train Up Your Child” and “Darling Jesus”, dedicated over four decades to gospel music, influencing generations of ministers and worshippers.

Born in Lagos and raised Muslim, she converted to Christianity in 1974, subsequently building a prominent career in gospel music.

She is survived by her husband, family, and a wide community of gospel ministers who continue to celebrate her enduring contributions.

Alabi’s tribute underscored the profound spiritual and cultural legacy Soetan leaves behind, marking the close of an era in Nigerian gospel music.
