The 30-year-old R&B and Afrobeats star, whose full name is Temilade Openiyi, made history as the first Nigerian to headline such a performance at a FIFA-organised football final.

Her appearance at the global event cements her rising influence on the international music scene.

Tems led the performance with fellow global stars J Balvin, Doja Cat and Emmanuel Kelly. The show was presented by Panini and broadcast to millions around the world.

A special stage was built high in the stadium stands, ensuring the football pitch remained untouched while allowing the venue to transform into a concert arena for the first time in FIFA history.

The final match was played between Chelsea of the English Premier League and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) of the French Ligue 1.

Although football was at the centre of the night, Tems stole a share of the spotlight with her soulful voice and confident presence.

“Tems turned a football final into a global concert moment, proving that Nigerian talent has no limits,” said a FIFA media officer at the event.

The historic performance took place before a record-breaking crowd of 81,118 people. According to PM News, it marked the highest ever attendance for a FIFA match.

Tems first gained major attention in 2020 after collaborating with fellow Nigerian star Wizkid on the song “Essence.”

The track reached number nine on the Billboard Hot 100, with its remix featuring Justin Bieber catapulting Tems to international fame.

That same year, she also appeared on “Fountains,” a track by Canadian rapper Drake.

Since then, she has become one of the most recognisable African voices in global music, earning multiple award nominations and collaborating with some of the biggest names in the industry.

Her inclusion in Sunday’s halftime show not only highlighted her artistic growth but also demonstrated the increasing global appeal of African music.

For many Nigerians and Africans watching, her performance was a proud moment that symbolised cultural pride and representation on the world stage.

Tems’ appearance at such a high-profile football final also speaks to the merging of sports and music as forces for global entertainment.

FIFA’s decision to launch a full concert experience at halftime could set a new trend for major tournaments around the world.

The show’s success will be remembered not just for the music but for what it represents: a shift towards celebrating diversity and talent from every part of the globe.
