Moji Afolayan blacklisted for rejecting sex from film marketers, opens up about her painful experience and choice to preserve dignity over fame
Veteran Nollywood actress Moji Afolayan has revealed that she was blacklisted early in her career after refusing to trade sexual favours for movie roles.
In a heartfelt interview with Oyinmomo TV, the 57-year-old actress and daughter of late actor Adeyemi ‘Adeluv’ Afolayan shared that her principled stand cost her fame, income and visibility in the film industry.
“This is because, at that time, when we had marketers at Idumota, they used to give producers money to work,” she explained.
“However, due to the kind of training I received at home, I cannot trade my body for movies.”
Moji disclosed that film marketers, who once held significant influence over Nollywood productions, often demanded sex in exchange for career advancement.
Her refusal led to deliberate exclusion from film opportunities.
“Because I did not do it, they held a meeting among themselves not to call me. I did not sleep with them. I did not offer my body for sex,”** she said firmly.
The actress added that many of her colleagues, including married women, gave in to the advances secretly, leading to complications in both their professional and personal lives.
Because I did not do it, they held a meeting among themselves not to call me. I did not offer my body for sex.
“They are all watching this programme. Many of them will have their husbands outside while they remain inside with these men,” she stated.
“They would tell me, ‘is it only my husband?’ I was like, is it because you want to help? Then hold on to your help.”
Despite the cost, Moji said she is proud of her decision. “I thank God I stood with my dignity. That is what I am enjoying today. I held on to my virginity.”
She recalled a late colleague who also lost work opportunities after declining a marketer’s demand.
According to her, the woman encouraged her to remain strong and shared how widespread the exploitation was.
Though Moji’s refusal affected her career trajectory, she remains grateful she never compromised her values.
“It affected me in terms of income and fame,” she admitted. “I cherish my body more than anything. Even my husband knows.”
She added that the rise of YouTube and social media has given her and others a second chance to tell their stories without going through exploitative gatekeepers.
