Meta sparks controversy with negative suspension of Abdulkareem

Meta suspension of Eedris Abdulkareem follows his new political track appealing to Donald Trump over Nigeria’s insecurity.

Meta Platforms Incorporated, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads, on Tuesday suspended the Facebook and Instagram accounts of Nigerian musician and activist Eedris Abdulkareem, less than a week after he released a politically charged single titled Open Letter to Donald Trump.

Meta flagged and took down the accounts days after Eedris Abdulkareem published the track under his label, Lakreem Entertainment, on TikTok on 29 November 2025.

The musician used the song to appeal directly to President of the United States Donald Trump for intervention in Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, while fiercely criticising Nigerian political leaders.

In the song, Eedris Abdulkareem describes Nigerian leaders as “criminals of all shades and hues” who gain while citizens endure kidnappings, killings and terrorism.

With the refrain “dem dey fear Donald Trump,” he positions the track as an attempt to draw global attention to the country’s crises.

Eedris Abdulkareem has long used music as a platform for speaking truth to power.

In April 2025, he released Tell Your Papa, a song directed at Seyi Tinubu urging him to inform his father, President Bola Tinubu, about escalating hardship across the country.

The National Broadcasting Commission later banned the track, claiming it breached the Broadcasting Code.

His history of political confrontation spans decades.

In 2004, then President Olusegun Obasanjo banned his hit song Jaga Jaga, which went on to become a powerful underground anthem resonating with Nigerians frustrated by governance failures.

As of publication time, Meta has not issued an explanation for the Meta suspension, and neither Eedris Abdulkareem nor his management has released a formal statement.

The development has triggered renewed public debate about artistic freedom, digital accountability and the influence of major technology companies in shaping political discourse.
